Health Glossary

Activated (sprouted) nuts  – soaked in water and salt for a period of time, which starts off the germination or sprouting process, then dehydrated at a low temperature. Soaking increases the nutrient value of the nuts along with breaking down the problematic compounds that help enhance their digestibility.

Antioxidants are phytochemicals, vitamins and other nutrients that protect our cells from damage and ageing caused by free radicals. Antioxidants should be consumed in food rather than taken as a dietary supplement.

Cacao  is the purest form of chocolate you can consume, which means it is raw and much less processed than cocoa powder or chocolate bars. Cacao is thought to be the highest source of antioxidants of all foods and the highest source of magnesium of all food. Raw cacao powder is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans. The process keeps the living enzymes in the cocoa and removes the fat (cacao butter).

Cane Sugar  is sucrose  which has been extracted from sugar cane, a tropical plant which produces naturally high concentrations of this sweet substance.

Cocoa  is the term used to refer to the heated form of cacao. Cocoa powder is produced similarly to cacao except cocoa undergoes a higher temperature of heat during processing.

Dairy Free  – free from milk-based ingredients. This includes casein, whey, lactose, and even milk fat. All vegan products are diary free.

Flavonoid/ Bioflavonoid – a group of several thousand antioxidant compounds found in fruits, vegetables and other plant foods and including rutin, anthocyanins, catechins and quercetin.

Free radicals are highly reactive, unstable atoms or molecules in the body which are a normal by-product of metabolism but are believed, in excess, to be a factor in onset of disease and the ageing process.

Gluten Free – free from gluten, a protein composite found in wheat, barley, rye, and all their species and hybrids

Mindfulness the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something; a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.

Paleo  is a lifestyle focused on nourishing and healing our bodies with unprocessed foods, ample relaxation and sleep, and healthy movement and exercise. A Paleo diet is about getting back to what we’ve always known is good for us. It’s a path to healing our bodies with real food instead of medicating our symptoms.

Plant based  diet is a diet that focuses around plant foods: fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds, and zero animal products. No meat, fish, butter, milk, eggs, cheese, gelatin or other animal by-product.

Probiotics – beneficial bacteria, such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, which are present in the digestive system and help to support digestion, immunity and detoxification, as well as helping to reduce allergies, intolerances and inflammation.

RAW not cooked. RAW foods are unprocessed, unrefined, cold-pressed, and never heated above 44˚C (115˚F).

Refined sugars are often classified as potential poisons to the body. They provide only empty calories lacking in other nutrients and minerals. In addition, they can drain the body of nutrients because of their demanding digestion requirements.

Superfood the food that can give you the best amount or range of the major, macro and new chemicals and bacteria most likely to be in shortfall in the average diet.

Vegan free from  animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products.
